New community planter coming to the Newbury depot!
A while ago Jon the director at Rivar Sand and Gravel saw an exciting idea that he has been keen to put into action at our Newbury depot. It is a raised planter using one of the crates our sandstone gets delivered in.
So this week we have a lovely new planter gracing the show garden at Newbury.
Our sandstone gets delivered in wooden crates lots of these get re-used for various projects but sometimes we have spare ones hanging around the depot. Jon has clad this one in feather board fence panels and is going to line it with used bulk bags before filling with drainage and topping off with a soil/compost mix.
The idea for this one is to create a mini allotment plot filled with fruit, vegetables and herbs for the community to enjoy.
We are very excited to get going and get this all planted up, we will keep you updated on our progress!
Community planting is growing (pun intended!) in popularity throughout the UK but they have been around since Victorian times.
Created to provide much needed fresh fruit and vegetables to those living highly populated areas with no access to gardens of their own, these community gardens were located in public spaces and tended to by volunteers. These areas were used as a space to socialize and provide a sense of community.
Today community gardens are still popular, in Thatcham we have the Thatcham Community Orchard at the Nature Discovery Centre and the Jubilee Sensory Garden at the Thatcham Town Council tended to by volunteers, both grow produce and are available to members of the community to use.
Importantly these spaces are also regularly used for community events, The Wassail held in the community orchard is a sight to behold!!
