Which Is Better - A Porcelain or Limestone Patio?

Which Is Better - A Porcelain or Limestone Patio?

Porcelain Tiles, Limestone Slabs, Natural Stone Patios

Picture of a Limestone Patio

The range and allure of the paving materials on the market means that you could find it tricky to settle on a favourite for a new patio. Every choice has unique attributes.

With natural stone there is no chance that your neighbour will have the same as you, the patterning and colours won’t be replicated anywhere, Mother Nature guarantees it. Concrete needn’t be lifeless, and wood effect paving offers exceptional craftsmanship and durability.

At Rivar Sand and Gravel we offer only the highest quality paving solutions at attractive prices with attention and advice which you often don’t receive from national chains. Whatever you’re tastes, at our Hare Hatch, Newbury, Tadley and Windlesham outlets you’ll discover an array of colours, textures and sizes with paving slabs from the leading paving manufacturers.

We’re here to help you get it right

Below, we look at limestone and porcelain patio paving solutions; both invite admiration and perform excellently. Which is right for you?

Limestone patio paving

Limestone is a sedimentary rock comprised mainly of calcium carbonate and a natural quartz content lends itself to veining and rich colouring which captivates. It was most popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries but has never really fallen out of fashion.

Suitable for use indoors and outdoors, you can carry a scheme throughout your property, adding to the flow and aesthetic appeal.

Limestone is prone to break down over time with the effects of acid rain which, given our increasing pollution levels, is a negative for an otherwise stunning and durable material. It is also affected by UV light and fades over the years.

The paving can be installed and sealed as a weekend project and a little maintenance is required. If you use a cleaning product, remember that acidic chemicals – hydrochloric acid is frequently in patio cleaners - affect limestone so soap and water or water alone are recommended instead.

Porcelain patio paving

Porcelain paving is comprised of clay, sand, feldspar and other minerals. Unlike crockery, this expertly crafted porcelain won’t break easily. Porcelain slabs are non-porous and strong thanks to the use during manufacture of high temperature kilns at up to 1400°C.

Like limestone, porcelain paving can be laid inside and outside and it will serve you for years, without losing its majestic appearance or colour definition. Porcelain slabs are lighter than natural stone options.

Porcelain patios are non-slip; frost, fade, watermark and stain resistant and they cope well with whatever the British weather throws down on them.

Easy to install, there’s no need to seal porcelain slabs. Enjoy no or low maintenance requirements.
