Since it’s re-introduction to Newbury in 2016 Rivar Sand and Gravel have sponsored the Newbury In Bloom competition, in particular sponsoring the schools category for the last 5 years.
This year we are so happy to have been able to present the Falkland Primary School Allotment with the overall winners award for their entry this year.
Falkland Primary school have entered the competition a few times over the years and we have loved seeing the plot develop and grow as each cohort of eager gardeners make their own mark on the plot.
The allotment plot has been cultivated into a beautifully productive bio-diverse area with sustainability and community at the heart of what they do, shown by the creation of the inventive bird feeding station!
Marion and David run the allotment and had this to say –
“The children are so excited to have won a prize for their allotment. The school provides the children but it is run independently and supported by funds raised by David and me at fetes, etc.
It is absolutely wonderful that we have a voucher goods to the value of £100 Most likely to be used on compost or mixture of top soil and compost to fill our raised beds with - desperately needed to supplement the stones at Wash Common! Looking forward to the children growing great vegetables next year”.
The judges of the competition said “we were so pleased with the effort everyone had made this year for our Newbury In Bloom campaign, especially with the unusually dry and hot conditions which would have made it even more challenging”
They were pleas3ed to see the bug hotels, bird boxes and bee friendly planting and the inventive ways that people collected and limited their water use.
Cllr Gage congratulated everyone who took part and gave a huge ‘thank you’ to the sponsors who all gave a £100 prize to each winner.
Rivar Sand and Gravel are more than happy to help and will be sponsoring the event again next year so start planting and get your ideas growing for Newbury In Bloom 2023!
